Tropical Storm Jerry Approaches; Heavy Rain Expected

Tropical Storm Jerry is making its final approach toward the northeastern Caribbean, with forecasters warning of heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and dangerous seas over the next 24 to 48 hours. The system, currently disorganised but strengthening slightly over warm Atlantic waters, is expected to bring significant impacts to islands including St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, and the Virgin Islands.

Meteorologists say Jerry remains a strong tropical storm, with sustained winds near 80 kilometres per hour and gusts potentially reaching 100 kilometres per hour as it passes near the Leeward Islands late Thursday into Friday. The most intense weather, including thunderstorms and downpours, is expected to occur overnight and early Friday.

Although Jerry is not yet a hurricane, the system’s broad circulation means rainbands will extend well beyond its centre. Forecasters are particularly concerned about heavy rainfall totals, which could reach 150 to 200 millimetres in some areas, triggering flash floods and landslides. While the centre of the storm is expected to pass closest to Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, along with neighbouring islands, are likely to experience bands of intense rain, intermittent thunderstorms, and rough seas through Friday.

“The rain and mudslide threat is the major concern,” meteorologists have warned, noting that even without hurricane-strength winds, the storm could still cause significant disruption. Sea conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly today, with swells posing a hazard to small craft and coastal areas.

Meanwhile, the Caribbean region continues to face unstable weather. On Tuesday, 7th October, a tornado in Trinidad caused structural damage and uprooted trees. Forecasters caution that similar isolated tornadoes or waterspouts could develop elsewhere as Jerry’s outer bands interact with local weather systems.

By the weekend, Jerry is expected to move northward, pulling moisture behind it but leaving residual rain across parts of the northeastern Caribbean. Authorities are urging residents to remain alert, be cautious in areas prone to flooding, and follow official updates as the storm continues its passage near the islands.
