Minister Henderson Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Workers Amid Tip-Sharing Concerns

Minister of Labour and Employment, Marsha Henderson, has reaffirmed the Government’s strong commitment to protecting workers’ rights following concerns raised about a recently introduced tip-sharing policy at the Park Hyatt St. Kitts.

Recognising the importance of fairness, transparency, and respect for employees in the hospitality industry, Minister Henderson immediately convened a multi-agency task force led by the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoL&E) to review the policy and ensure that workers’ interests are fully safeguarded.

The task force — comprising representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, the Labour Department, the Attorney General’s Chambers, the hotel’s management, and the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union — has been meeting over the past several weeks to assess the matter and work towards an equitable resolution.

Minister Henderson stressed that the Government would take decisive action to ensure that no policy undermines workers’ welfare.

“The Government will not sit idly by while any policy threatens the fairness or livelihood of our workers,” she stated. “Our goal is clear — to arrive at a fair, transparent, and sustainable resolution that protects our workers and upholds the integrity of our tourism industry.”

She noted that discussions within the task force have been frank, constructive, and focused on achieving solutions that restore balance while maintaining strong collaboration among all stakeholders.

Minister Henderson, who also serves as Minister of Tourism, emphasised that hospitality employees remain central to the success of St. Kitts and Nevis’ tourism product, which depends on fairness and respect within the workplace.

“Our hospitality workers are the backbone of this industry,” she said. “They deserve an environment that values their contribution and protects their rights.”

The Government has pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely and will issue updates as the review process progresses, underscoring its ongoing dedication to protecting workers’ interests and maintaining transparency across all sectors.
