La Guerite Residents Become Property Owners Under L.A.N.D. Initiative

Residents of La Guerite reached a historic milestone on October 16th, 2025, as the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis formally handed over land titles and ownership rights to families who have occupied the area for generations. The ceremony, hosted by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, forms part of the Government’s L.A.N.D. (Land Allocation, Normalisation and Distribution) Initiative under the broader Land Regularisation Programme — a key pillar of the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA).

The initiative, which falls under Pillar 5 of SISA: Sustainable Settlements, seeks to promote equitable land ownership, community empowerment, and secure tenure for citizens across the Federation.

Delivering remarks at the event, Minister of Public Infrastructure and Member of Parliament for St. Christopher Three, Honourable Konris Maynard, hailed the handover as a moment of justice, dignity, and fulfilment for the people of La Guerite.

“For generations, the people of La Guerite have lived, loved, raised families, and built their lives on this land. Yet for too long, true legal ownership seemed just beyond grasp. Today, that changes,” Minister Maynard declared. “You now stand not just as residents, but as landowners — rightful heirs to what you and your families have built for generations.”

Minister Maynard underscored that the L.A.N.D. Initiative was made possible through the dedication and promise-keeping of the Labour Party Administration, led by Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, who had pledged to transfer the lands at no cost to residents.

“Your caring Labour Party Administration took care of all your legal fees and completed all the registrations at the land registry on your behalf,” he said. “The only thing now remaining is for you to go, like everybody else who owns land, down to the Inland Revenue Department, pay your stamp duty, and you will have the original title for now and forever.”

The minister reaffirmed the government’s ongoing commitment to the people of La Guerite, announcing plans to construct new connecting roads linking the community to Buckley’s and Shadwell, further improving infrastructure and accessibility.

“This is not just about land,” Minister Maynard emphasised. “This is about empowerment, equity, and social justice.”

The La Guerite handover marks the beginning of a series of similar ceremonies across St. Kitts, with additional events scheduled for Amsterdam, St. Paul’s, later today and Upper Monkey Hill, St. Peter’s, on Friday, October 17th.

The L.A.N.D. Initiative continues to represent a cornerstone of the Dr. Terrance Drew-led Government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda, ensuring that land ownership — long considered a foundation of stability and resilience — becomes a right, not a privilege, for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
