Mandatory Recall Issued for “Milonga – Cannabis Infused Tea”

The St. Kitts & Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS) has announced a mandatory national recall of all flavours of the product “Milonga – Cannabis Infused Tea: Yerba Mate”, after the beverage was discovered on retail shelves in the Federation without regulatory approval.

Officials warned consumers not to ingest the product, whose label declares it contains 10 mg of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)—a Class A controlled substance under the nation’s Drugs Act. The sale and distribution of such products are therefore illegal in the Federation.

Retailers and distributors have been ordered to remove the product from shelves within 48 hours and cease all sales immediately. Non-compliance will trigger enforcement under SKNBS Regulations SRO 35 & SRO 36, the Drugs (Prevention and Abatement of the Misuse and Abuse of Drugs) Act, and the Customs and Excise Act.

The recall comes amid growing concerns about the appearance of unapproved cannabis-infused drinks in mainstream retail outlets, raising serious public-health and safety questions—especially for minors who may be exposed inadvertently. The SKNBS emphasised the urgency of the action, warning that “the presence of this unauthorised cannabis-infused beverage in public traded spaces … pose[s] a significant risk to public health and safety, especially to children.”

Consumers who may have purchased Milonga tea are urged to dispose of it safely and avoid consumption. The SKNBS also emphasised that the recall was strictly enforced and not voluntary. Retailers are reminded that failure to comply may result in sanctions, fines or the confiscation of stock.

While this marks a significant regulatory intervention locally, the recall reflects a broader global trend of closer oversight of cannabis-infused food and beverage products. Recent recalls in jurisdictions such as California and Canada highlight the rising challenge of ensuring compliance, labelling accuracy and product safety in adult-use markets.
