St. Peter’s Road Project: A Milestone of National Transformation

The newly commissioned St. Peter’s and F. T. Williams Highways have been hailed as symbols of progress, partnership, and pride for St. Kitts and Nevis, marking a major milestone in the nation’s infrastructure development and community renewal.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew

During the official opening ceremony this morning, 5th November, 2025, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew described the completion of the St. Peter’s Road Project as “a proud and transformative moment for the country”, declaring, “This is not just St. Peter’s. This is the great state of St. Peter’s.”

The long-awaited project, which has significantly upgraded road safety, drainage, and connectivity for the rapidly growing St. Peter’s area, was celebrated as a triumph of leadership, collaboration, and national unity.

Dr. Drew extended high praise to Minister of Public Infrastructure, Konris Maynard, under whose direction the project was completed.

“The minister was 100% committed, and he has delivered. He has not only delivered to St. Peter’s, but he has delivered for the whole country,” the Prime Minister said.

He noted that Minister Maynard’s leadership has also extended to other critical national priorities, including the delivery of the Cayon Well, which resolved longstanding water shortages, and the upcoming commissioning of a two-million-gallon desalination plant—a landmark step toward water security for the Federation.

The Prime Minister also recognised the efforts of the Public Works Department and its technical officers for their tireless work in bringing the project to completion.

Dr. Drew emphasised that the new roadway exemplifies the power of partnership between local talent and international allies. He commended contractor Alexis Hazel and his team at Rock and Dirt Ltd., describing their performance as a model for excellence in local enterprise.

“What makes me proud is that this is a local company that has delivered a project like this of such high quality,” Dr. Drew said. “For Rock and Dirt, it was not just about another job—it was about their responsibility to help develop their country.”

He also acknowledged the vital contributions of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Republic of Cuba, key partners in infrastructure and development support for the Federation.

“Allow me to recognise His Excellency, Edward Tau, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), our great development partner… Also our partners from the Republic of Cuba—you have done extremely well in delivering this road,” the Prime Minister noted.

Reflecting on his personal connection to the area, Dr. Drew recalled growing up in St. Peter’s when dangerous road conditions posed daily risks to residents of the area.

“I always said that should not be,” he remembered. “When major roads were commissioned in other areas, St. Peter’s was left out… We’re not asking for extra, just inclusion.”

He described his years of advocacy to have St. Peter’s recognised within the national road network, noting that the community’s neglect under previous administrations had become a defining motivation for his leadership.

“How can you do all of the other roads and leave out St. Peter’s? St. Peter’s is the largest area outside of Basseterre,” he said. “That had to be corrected—and it has been corrected.”

Dr. Drew said the new infrastructure not only restores dignity to residents but also opens opportunities for economic growth and safer mobility.

“When I drive all the way up and see the sidewalks, the drains, and the cat eyes that illuminate the road at night—it brings pride to all of us,” he said. “This road is helping us to build a modern community of St. Peter’s… The development of this area means the development of the whole of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

In closing, the Prime Minister spoke passionately of the pride and perseverance of the people of St. Peter’s, describing the project as both personal and historic.

“Never again will this community be considered one that is not at the forefront of national development. Never again will anybody look down on this community. Never again will our children believe that they are not from a great place,” Dr. Drew declared.

He added: “Today is a proud moment for me. Today I feel satisfied. Today I feel vindicated… It was all worth it, because we’re able to uplift our community.”
