Prime Minister Drew Reports Major Acceleration in National Housing Across St. Kitts and Nevis

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has confirmed that housing construction in St. Kitts and Nevis is advancing at an unprecedented pace, with new developments now underway across the entire Federation. Speaking during the 25th November edition of The Roundtable, Dr. Drew said the scale and speed of construction reflect the Government’s commitment to expanding access to climate-resilient housing while driving national development.

The Prime Minister reported that new homes are currently being built in Stapleton, Gillard’s Meadow, Ottley’s Village, Newtown and Harry Phipps (Halfway Tree), with work about to begin in Racecourse (Newton Ground), Sandy Point, and additional sites scheduled in constituency number three.

“All within just four weeks, every constituency in Saint Kitts and Nevis will have houses being built,” Dr. Drew said. “This is a clear sign of progress and delivery for our people.”

He explained that all new homes are being constructed to modern climate standards, using reinforced materials and designs to withstand intensifying weather events driven by climate change.

“These houses are being built with wall roofs, with the opportunity to extend up top,” he said. “But the reason why we are reinforcing them with eight-inch blocks, steel and concrete wall roof is so that they can sustain Category Five hurricanes.”

Dr. Drew said the intensity of construction has reached a point where local concrete suppliers are signalling difficulty meeting demand.

“We have a lot of houses being built at this time, to the point where the companies in St. Kitts and Nevis that produce concrete are telling me they will not be able to keep up,” he noted. “But we cannot slow down, because our people need these homes.”

The Prime Minister linked the housing programme to the wider push to improve national resilience, citing the country’s increasing exposure to severe weather events as climate change accelerates. He referenced the devastation in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa, noting that St. Kitts and Nevis must prioritise strong, protective infrastructure to safeguard citizens.

Beyond housing, Dr. Drew highlighted several major national development projects currently progressing, including the new Basseterre High School, the Symbol of Love Museum and Monuments at Fort Thomas, and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel development. He also reaffirmed the Government’s focus on constructing a new climate-resilient general hospital, which is expected to receive final approval shortly with construction beginning in December 2025.

The Prime Minister said the combination of housing expansion, infrastructural investment and economic activity demonstrates the Government’s sustained delivery across multiple sectors.

“These projects reflect our commitment to improving lives, creating jobs, and building a stronger, more resilient St. Kitts and Nevis.”
