Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for St. Christopher 1, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, used his contribution to the 2026 Budget Debate on Wednesday to frame housing as a cornerstone of dignity and stability, while pointing to what he described as unprecedented delivery under the current Labour administration.
Addressing the National Assembly, Dr. Hanley argued that housing policy must be understood as more than construction statistics, describing it instead as central to the wellbeing of families and communities. “Housing is the cornerstone of dignity, security and community,” he told Parliament, adding that the Government remains firmly committed to ensuring that citizens have access to safe and affordable homes.
He reported that the scale of housing delivery under the current administration has been unmatched within a single parliamentary term. According to Dr. Hanley, the National Housing Corporation has completed 260 homes, with a further 60 currently under construction, bringing the total number of homes delivered or underway to 320. “That has never happened in a one term,” he stated, underscoring what he characterised as a historic level of output.
Beyond direct construction, the Deputy Prime Minister placed strong emphasis on expanding opportunities for first-time home ownership, describing it as a deliberate strategy to help working families build long-term stability. He revealed that 159 first-time homeowners were assisted in 2023, followed by 168 in 2024, with approximately 158 projected for 2025. “That is 485 first-time homeowners,” Dr. Hanley said, noting that when combined with National Housing Corporation units, “we are talking about over 800 people who have been assisted into home ownership.”
Dr. Hanley stressed that these initiatives reflect a people-centred approach to governance, where policy outcomes are measured by their real-world impact on households rather than by headline figures alone. He described the Government’s housing interventions as direct investments in families, community cohesion, and social resilience.
The Deputy Prime Minister’s remarks formed part of a broader endorsement of the 2026 Budget, which he characterised as evidence of practical delivery aligned with the Government’s wider development vision. His contribution reinforced the administration’s narrative that housing remains a central pillar of national development, social equity, and economic security.
