The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has issued clarification following the United States’ decision to temporarily suspend the issuance of immigrant visas for nationals of 75 countries, including St. Kitts and Nevis.
The measure, announced by U.S. authorities on 14th January, 2026, applies exclusively to immigrant visas, which relate to permanent residency in the United States, commonly referred to as “green cards.”
In a statement issued on 15th January, the Government confirmed that non-immigrant visas, including those for tourism, business, study, and other temporary travel, are not affected by the suspension.
Following engagement with the U.S. Embassy in Barbados, officials were advised that immigrant visa applications will continue to be accepted by U.S. authorities. However, all such applications are currently being refused under Section 221(g) of U.S. immigration law, a procedural step used when additional information or guidance is required to complete adjudication.
The Government emphasised that these refusals are administrative in nature and linked to enhanced vetting and screening procedures, including assessments related to whether applicants may require public assistance after entry into the United States.
Crucially, immigrant visa applications and their issuance are matters strictly between the Government of the United States and the individual applicant, and do not involve the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis or the government of any other country.
It was further noted that the directive does not apply to dual nationals travelling on passports of countries not included in the list, and that exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
While acknowledging the right of the United States to implement national security and immigration measures, the Government said it remains committed to protecting the interests of its citizens. Officials indicated that they will continue to engage U.S. authorities, monitor developments, and provide updates to the public as further information becomes available.
Residents are being encouraged to rely on official government communications for accurate and timely updates on the matter.
