Labour Government Extends Duty-Free Concessions to Support Farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture has extended duty-free concessions to farm vehicle repair parts, a move aimed at easing operational costs for farmers and strengthening agricultural production in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Officials say the extension is intended to reduce the cost of maintaining farm machinery and equipment, allowing farmers to keep operations running more efficiently while improving productivity across the sector.

The concession forms part of a wider package of support measures being rolled out by the Government to assist farmers, including technical assistance, material support, and other incentives designed to boost local food production and enhance food security.

To qualify for the duty-free concession, farmers must be registered with the Department of Agriculture and submit the required documentation, including an invoice for the repair parts being imported.

The extension comes as the Ministry continues to advance strategies focused on increasing domestic food production, improving farmer livelihoods, and reducing the Federation’s reliance on imported produce.

Since taking office, the Labour administration has prioritised policies aimed at expanding agroecological practices, introducing new crop varieties, and strengthening technical support to farmers as part of a broader effort to build resilience within the agricultural sector.

Farmers have welcomed the continued support, noting that duty-free concessions and the distribution of farming materials under the ‘25 by 25’ initiative have helped ease cost pressures while supporting national food security goals.
