The observance of History and Heritage Month in St. Kitts and Nevis has been framed by a renewed call to recognise resistance, remembrance and national responsibility, with Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew urging the Federation to honour those who stood against oppression.
Speaking following Monday’s meeting of the Federal Cabinet, Prime Minister Drew said the month-long observance must go beyond cultural celebration and include recognition of the courage of those who resisted injustice, particularly the heroes of the Buckley’s Uprising of 28th January, 1935.
The Prime Minister confirmed that the struggle of the Buckley’s martyrs will now be formally recognised with a national holiday beginning in 2027, marking a significant step in institutionalising remembrance of the labour movement and working-class resistance.
Dr. Drew noted that remembering the past is essential to reclaiming dignity, addressing historical injustice and ensuring that future generations inherit a stronger and fairer St. Kitts and Nevis.
History and Heritage Month was marked at the Cabinet level with members wearing Afro-Caribbean attire, a symbolic gesture intended to honour the nation’s past, celebrate cultural identity and reinforce the importance of educating future generations about the resilience and achievements of people of African descent across the Caribbean.
The observance also underscored the Federation’s place within the global African diaspora. The Government pointed to ongoing work under the CARICOM–Africa partnership, which seeks to strengthen solidarity between African nations, Caribbean states and the wider diaspora, while advancing integration and pursuing reparatory justice through a coordinated transcontinental framework.
Recent efforts to deepen ties with Africa were also highlighted, including the signing of memoranda of understanding, the introduction of visa-free travel arrangements with Nigeria, and expanded cultural, trade and exchange partnerships.
Ambassadors Leon Natta-Nelson and Kenneth Douglas joined Cabinet members for the official observance, reflecting what the Government described as a shared national commitment to preserving and celebrating the heritage of St. Kitts and Nevis.
