National Conference Advances School Nutrition Policy Development

A national conference hosted by the Ministry of Health is bringing key stakeholders together to shape a School Nutrition Policy for St. Kitts and Nevis under the EU-CaN Project.

St. Kitts and Nevis has taken another step towards strengthening child health and wellbeing with the hosting of a two-day National Conference focused on the development of a School Nutrition Policy.

The conference, which is being held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, is organised by the Ministry of Health under the EU-CaN Project, an initiative funded by the European Union aimed at improving food and nutrition systems across the Caribbean.

The EU-CaN Project, which stands for EU–Caribbean Nutrition, supports regional efforts to improve access to healthy diets, strengthen food systems and address nutrition-related challenges, particularly among children and vulnerable populations. In St. Kitts and Nevis, the project is being used to support national work towards healthier school food environments.

The conference brings together stakeholders from the health, education, agriculture and development sectors to collectively shape what a comprehensive School Nutrition Policy should look like, and how it can be realistically implemented within schools across the Federation.

Opening the conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources, Hon. Samal Duggins, both reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to promoting healthier eating habits among school-aged children and fostering a culture of wellness from an early age.

Discussions during the two-day event are centred on practical issues, including the quality of food served in schools, nutrition education, and the role of local agriculture in supplying healthier meal options. The aim is to ensure that any policy developed is both sustainable and aligned with national health and education priorities.

Officials say the conference represents an important milestone in the process of finalising a School Nutrition Policy that supports improved health outcomes for children, while contributing to broader efforts to reduce diet-related non-communicable diseases in St. Kitts and Nevis.
