Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew is encouraging the public to adopt healthier lifestyles, noting that meaningful improvements in national health will depend not only on public policy but also on personal responsibility.
Addressing the National Assembly last Thursday, Dr. Drew acknowledged positive healthcare outcomes in the Federation but stressed that national progress must be reinforced by individual action in daily life.
He explained that better health does not require drastic measures. Instead, he pointed to steady, manageable habits that can be maintained over time, particularly in areas such as diet and hydration.
“Start small, even if you start with 10 minutes a day, but you are consistent with that 10 minutes, it increases over time. It’s better than starting off with a full hour… and then you keep up that for two months then you go back to where you were,” Dr. Drew said.
The Prime Minister also urged a reduction in sugar consumption and called on citizens to improve water intake, highlighting the impact of everyday choices on long-term health outcomes. He also encouraged moderate, regular physical activity, emphasising that consistency is more important than intensity.
“These changes are profound. They can help: if you drop your salt, [you] decrease your blood pressure; if you drop your sugar, [you] decrease your blood sugar and decrease your weight, as a matter of fact, and in addition to a little exercise,” he noted.
Dr. Drew said his Labour administration’s health transformation agenda prioritises prevention, early detection and lifestyle education as key strategies to reduce non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. He noted that these conditions continue to place significant strain on families and the national healthcare system.
While reaffirming continued government investment in healthcare infrastructure, advanced services and improved access to care, the Prime Minister maintained that the country’s long-term health ultimately rests on the collective commitment of its people to healthier living.
