Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKN Source) – In honour of the tenth anniversary of the JNF General Hospital’s Hemodialysis Unit, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis will provide a fully financed scholarship to a nurse interested in pursuing studies in hemodialysis and renal treatment.
“The Prime Minister is offering a full scholarship to any nurse who wishes to specialise in hemodialysis and kidney treatment, and the nurse will get their full salary while studying abroad,” Dr. Jenson Morton, Director of Health Institutions, told SKN Source on Tuesday (Sept. 05).
“The fact that the hemodialysis unit was first conceptualised and formed, and the innovation behind it actually becoming something that’s feasible, is something that’s a big deal more than anything else,” he added.
Dr. Morton’s remarks follow Prime Minister and Minister of Health Hon. Dr. Terrence Drew’s declaration about lowering the cost of hemodialysis services at the JNF General Hospital. People can now obtain hemodialysis services for EC$200 rather than EC$400.
The Hemodialysis Unit was established in 2013 by former Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, Her Excellency Dame Marcella Liburd, Minister with responsibility for health at the time, and Dr. Terrence Drew, a medical internist.
Dr. Morton also mentioned that the Ministry of Health is seeking to introduce kidney transplant services at the JNF General Hospital which he said will significantly enhance the delivery of healthcare in the Federation.
