Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNSOURCE) — The Ministry of Health has formally recognised and appointed nurses who were trained in the Republic of Cuba at a small but significant ceremony conducted at the Joseph N. France General Hospital’s conference room.
Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister and Minister of Health, attended the ceremony, as did Dr. Rondayln Dennis-Bradshaw, Principal Nursing Officer; Kerry Williams-Tuckett, Director of Institutional Nursing Services; and Dr. Jenson Morton, Director of Health Institutions.
Dr. Morton commented on the nurses’ appointment to the post of Registered Nurse, saying, “When you study medicine in different jurisdictions, you are exposed to different methods. You have specific strengths and the capacity to operate certain machinery…”
The nurses who were honoured on August 29, 2023, left the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis for the Republic of Cuba to further their education. When the nurses returned to the twin island Federation in 2013, their General Nursing Certificates and Associate Degrees in Nursing were not acknowledged by the St Christopher and Nevis Nurses and Midwives Council.
According to a government statement, the reinstatement of the licensees demonstrates the government’s unwavering support for healthcare professionals and commitment to improving the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.
