Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNSOURCE) As the nation celebrates its 40th Independence, the government has implemented an initiative to assist disconnected citizens with regained access to electricity.
Known as the Independence 40 Electricity Reset, this program aims to offer a fresh start without reconnection fees or mandatory deposits.
Clement Jomo Williams, General Manager of St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC), gave some insight on this initiative while speaking on Wednesday’s (September 27th) edition of Power Talk on ZIZ.
Mr. Williams explained that with this program in place, individuals seeking to be reconnected will no longer be subjected to reconnection fees.
“This initiative encourages persons who are currently disconnected to come into the office and get reconnected,” he said.
He further added that the Independence 40 Electricity Reset also removes the necessity of making a deposit when reconnecting electricity services.
“Now, as the Prime Minister mentioned, it is not a requirement to make a deposit, however we strongly encourage persons to put down whatever little you can put down as a deposit…. as it helps defer the arrears that you still have to pay in addition to your current supply,” The General Manager said.
It is crucial to note that the Independence 40 Electricity Reset is not a debt forgiveness or debt wipe-off measure. Therefore, as part of the program requirements, individuals must set up a deferred payment arrangement to address their outstanding arrears.
“You must set up a deferred payment arrangement for the outstanding arrears, that would have cause you to be disconnected in the first place. This rest is not a wipe off or debt forgiveness in any whatsoever,” explained Mr. Williams.
He added that it is indeed a great opportunity for persons to come in and start a fresh.
