Citizen Security Secretariat Urges Road Safety Amid Festive Season After Tragic Accidents

In the wake of several devastating traffic accidents that have claimed lives and left others gravely injured, the Citizen Security Secretariat has made a passionate plea to residents of St. Kitts and Nevis to prioritise safety on the roads. The recent incidents, which occurred within days of each other, underscore the urgent need for vigilance as the Federation enters the busy Sugar Mas and Christmas season.

Tragedy Strikes St. Kitts and Nevis Roads

The spate of accidents has plunged affected families and communities into mourning. Between 6th and 11th December, six lives were lost in traffic accidents. With the holiday period traditionally bringing increased road activity, the Secretariat is calling for heightened responsibility and awareness among all road users.

Eartha Carey, Coordinator of the Citizen Security Secretariat, expressed condolences to those impacted by the tragedies. “Our thoughts are with the families and friends grieving these unimaginable losses. These incidents remind us of how fragile life is and the importance of taking every precaution when using the roads,” she said.

Safety First: A Call to Action

The Secretariat’s urgent appeal focuses on preventing further loss of life through adherence to road safety principles. Drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike are being asked to prioritise safety by avoiding common risk factors that lead to accidents.

Some of the key recommendations made by the Secretariat include:

• Avoid Driving Under the Influence: Alcohol and drugs impair decision-making and increase accident risks.
• Obey Speed Limits: Adjust speeds based on road and weather conditions, and stay within posted limits.
• Minimise Distractions: Avoid using mobile phones or other devices while driving.
• Rest Before Driving: Fatigue slows reaction times and can lead to dangerous mistakes.
• Wear Seatbelts: Proper use of seatbelts significantly reduces injury severity during accidents.

Festive Season Vigilance

The Citizen Security Secretariat is especially concerned about the festive period, which often sees a rise in road activity due to celebrations and family gatherings. Carey urged the public to balance holiday excitement with responsible decision-making.

“The holidays are a time of joy and togetherness, but reckless behaviour on the road can shatter lives in an instant,” she noted. “We implore everyone to think about the consequences of their actions behind the wheel. Your life and the lives of others are too precious to risk.”

The Secretariat highlighted the primary causes of accidents—speeding, distractions, fatigue, and driving under the influence—as behaviours that must change to ensure safer roads. Community members are also encouraged to hold each other accountable and promote a culture of safety.
