Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court Launches 2025 New Law Year

The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) will officially commence the 2025 New Law Year on 10th January, 2025 with its traditional Ceremonial Opening under the theme, “Accessibility and Awareness – The ECSC Bridging the Gap Through Community Awareness.” The theme for this year’s opening underscores the ECSC’s mission to increase awareness and accessibility to justice, bridging gaps within communities across the region.

The proceedings, hosted in Saint Lucia as the primary Member State, will feature the first scheduled sitting of the Court of Appeal for the year. The key events in St. Kitts and Nevis will include a church service at the St. Paul Anglican Church in Charlestown, Nevis, at 8:00am, followed by a ceremonial procession to the Theodore L. Hobson KC Court Building.

The event will feature an inspection of the Guard and a Special Sitting of the Court, which begins at 9:30am. At 10:00am, the Acting Chief Justice, His Lordship The Honourable Mr. Mario Michel, will deliver the keynote address live from Saint Lucia.

A United Judiciary Across Member States

In keeping with tradition, the ECSC will hold a unified Special Sitting for all nine Member States and Territories of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Speakers from each territory, including Miselle O’Brien from St. Kitts and Nevis, will participate via Zoom.

The ceremonies will be broadcast live on VON Radio, Saint Lucia Information Service, and UWITV, as well as the ECSC’s official website and Facebook page.

Nevis Newscast and SKNIS will stream the events in the Federation.

Citizens are invited to engage with the event either in person or virtually. The church service in Nevis is open to the public and they are encourages to tune in to the broadcasts to witness the proceedings that mark the ECSC’s commitment to justice and accessibility.

Established in 1967 under the West Indies Associated States Supreme Court Order, the ECSC serves as a superior court of record for six independent states and three British Overseas Territories within the OECS. It holds unlimited jurisdiction, ensuring justice across Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, and Montserrat.
