St. Kitts and Nevis Renews Calls for Urgent Support to Haiti in Shadow of 200th Anniversary of Indemnity Agreement

St. Kitts and Nevis continues to champion urgent regional and international action to address the worsening crisis in Haiti, as its diplomats engage in high-level advocacy on multiple global platforms.

On May 1, the Federation’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Her Excellency Dr. Mutryce Williams, joined fellow Caribbean Community (CARICOM) ambassadors in a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The gathering, held in New York, focused on escalating armed violence in Haiti and the urgent need to restore constitutional order and humanitarian stability.

The CARICOM Caucus reaffirmed its shared commitment to supporting Haiti in its efforts to overcome decades of hardship and insecurity.

This latest diplomatic push follows a recent statement by Her Excellency Jacinth Henry-Martin, St. Kitts and Nevis Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS). Ambassador Henry-Martin was marking the bicentennial of Haiti’s coerced indemnity to France; an agreement signed in 1825 that forced the newly independent nation to pay France in exchange for formal recognition of its sovereignty.

Her Excellency Henry-Martin described the imposed debt as “a profound injustice that continues to echo through Haiti’s reality,” and condemned it as a form of economic coercion that stifled the nation’s development for more than a century. She called on the Americas to confront the “unfinished work of justice,” urging member states to reflect on the region’s shared history and embrace a future built on fairness, dignity, and cooperation.

St. Kitts and Nevis continues to stand in solidarity with the people of Haiti and continues to advocate for their place as a vital and respected member of the hemispheric family.

The Federation is also pressing for collaborative, multilateral efforts to ensure that support for Haiti moves beyond symbolic gestures and becomes part of a sustained, action-oriented regional agenda.
