St. Kitts and Nevis to Host 2025 Global Sustainable Islands Summit

St. Kitts and Nevis will take centre stage for the 2025 Global Sustainable Islands Summit, scheduled for 27th – 29th May, bringing together global leaders, experts, and sustainability advocates. The event, a joint initiative between the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and Island Innovation, a consultancy specialising in sustainability, aims to create solutions for island nations worldwide, reinforcing the Federation’s growing role in the global sustainability dialogue.

The summit builds on the success of the 2024 Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4), continuing the conversation on sustainable development. The 2025 event will focus on four core thematic areas: Water Sustainability and Energy Nexus, Agricultural Resilience and Climate Adaptation, Climate-Health Interactions, and Geothermal Energy.

Senator Dr. Joyelle Clarke

Minister of Environment and Climate Action, Dr. Joyelle Clarke, and Executive Research Officer, Aquanjé Robinson, both expressed their enthusiasm for the summit’s potential to enhance the Federation’s leadership in global climate advocacy.

Dr. Clarke highlighted St. Kitts and Nevis’ influence on the world stage, referencing Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew’s appearance at COP28 in Dubai alongside global figures such as Bill Gates and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. “We’re not looking for handouts; we are looking for partnership,” Dr. Clarke asserted, emphasising the global reach of St. Kitts and Nevis and the significance of the summit for island nations.

Menwhile, Robinson underscored the importance of SIDS’ involvement in shaping global climate policy. “Having high-level decision-makers listen to the concerns of island nations presents a unique opportunity to influence policy and effect real change,” Robinson said.

The summit’s timing is crucial, given the rising global concerns over climate change. In 2024, the world saw record-breaking temperatures, inching closer to the 1.5°C threshold set by the Paris Agreement. Despite challenges, St. Kitts and Nevis and other SIDS remain at the forefront of innovative climate action, continuously seeking adaptation and mitigation solutions.

The 2025 summit will provide an invaluable platform for island nations to showcase their leadership in sustainability, share best practices, and advocate for actionable commitments from international partners.
