The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has marked a major leap in its national digital transformation agenda, as Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew officially launched the training phase of the Cyber Nations Programme by handing over laptops to the first cohort of participants.
This milestone signals the formal commencement of a transformative initiative designed to equip 100 nationals with internationally recognised cybersecurity training and certifications. The Cyber Nations Program is a joint effort between the government and Canadian cybersecurity firm Protexxa, aimed at building a skilled local workforce for a fast-growing global industry.
“This programme represents a whole new industry sector being built in St. Kitts and Nevis,” Dr. Drew stated during the handover ceremony. “It’s not just about enhancing our national cybersecurity — it’s about connecting our people to international opportunities.”
Participants will undergo intensive training over several months, culminating in Canadian-certified credentials and support for job placement. The Government has structured the programme to reduce financial barriers: each trainee receives a USD $10,000 scholarship, covering half the cost upfront. The remaining USD $10,000 will be repaid only after job placement, through manageable salary deductions.
“This programme has multiple objectives,” the Prime Minister added. “It’s about national readiness, creating job opportunities, and opening doors globally for our people.”
Cyber Nations is a core component of the Government’s broader strategy to make digital transformation in St. Kitts and Nevis a reality. Prime Minister Drew pointed to recent progress in online public services, including digital driver’s licence renewals, tax payments, and preparations for a national digital ID set to launch in 2026. Plans are also underway to eliminate physical stamps from government transactions.
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of cybersecurity in securing the country’s expanding digital infrastructure and attracting international business. Referring to the recent acquisition of Christophe Harbour marina by Safe Harbor Marinas, he noted, “They expect St. Kitts and Nevis to protect their information. This is how serious this is.”
The training programme not only promises international career mobility for participants but also strengthens the Federation’s reputation as a digitally forward and investment-ready nation.
Dr. Drew expressed optimism for the future expansion of the initiative. “Once we have the first successful cohorts, we’re going to build it out even more. So the opportunities will be vast — local, regional, and international.”
As St. Kitts and Nevis continues its digital evolution, Cyber Nations serves as a powerful example of the Government’s commitment to innovation, employment, and national development.
