St. Kitts and Nevis is set for a major transformation in technical and vocational education, following the announcement of the Christopher Wilkin Institute of Technology at the NVQ-SKN graduation ceremony on 3rd September. Minister of Education, Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, revealed that the new institute will merge three existing TVET institutions – AVEC, NSTP, and Project Strong – to create a unified, modern hub for skills training.
The move comes as 38 trainees celebrated their success in attaining NVQ Level 1 certifications, a milestone Dr. Hanley described as a reflection of the nation’s commitment to human capital development. He emphasised that the Christopher Wilkin Institute of Technology would embody inclusivity, adaptability, and excellence, while positioning St. Kitts and Nevis to invest in new and emerging technologies.
“Our most recent acquisition of a welding simulator is only the beginning,” Dr. Hanley said, highlighting preparations to introduce simulators, virtual reality, and augmented reality systems into training. “The NVQ-SKN stands as a testament to our national dedication to human capital development. It reflects our recognition that the true strength of our nation lies in the skills, talents, and determination of our people.”
The merger is expected to strengthen vocational training, expand opportunities for students, and ensure the sustainability of skills development nationwide. By bearing the names of two pioneering figures in TVET, Clyde Christopher and Fitzroy Wilkin, the institute also pays tribute to the legacy of those who helped shape the country’s technical education framework.
The announcement marks a pivotal moment for education reform in the federation, reinforcing the government’s drive to modernise workforce training and support economic growth through innovation and skills development.
