Suriname deports seven Brazilian criminals

Suriname has deported seven Brazilian nationals, who are part of an international criminal organization and discovered hiding in the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

“With this action, Suriname emphasizes that it does not provide shelter to international criminals,” the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said in a statement, adding that the men were probably hiding in Suriname for several months after fleeing Brazil.

The OM said that the seven men were located after intensive coordination and information exchange with the Brazilian Federal Police and after thorough intelligence gathering and investigation by the Judicial Intervention Team. They were arrested on Tuesday evening with the support of the National Army.

The Public Prosecution Service said that due to their criminal background and membership of a criminal organisation, it was decided to declare them persona non grata.

The OM described them as “very hardened criminals”, suspected of serious crimes, including money laundering, smuggling and other criminal offences.“Escorting the seven deportees on a commercial flight could pose some challenges,” it said, adding that the criminals were picked up on Wednesday evening by a plane provided by the Brazilian Federal Police.
