Government Enhances Public Safety with CCTV Surveillance Upgrade at Cockleshell Beach

Cockleshell Beach on St. Kitts’ Southeast Peninsula, a vital hub for tourism and inter-island transport, has received a significant security upgrade through the installation of a modern CCTV surveillance system supported by underground fibre-optic cable. This development is part of the Government’s broader effort to enhance public safety and national security infrastructure across the Federation.

The CCTV system was delivered under the Universal Service Fund (USF) and overseen by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC). Following a transparent bidding process, St. Kitts and Nevis Cable Communications Ltd. (The Cable) was awarded the contract on 24th March, 2025, with a three-month timeline to complete installation, testing, and commissioning. The XCD $423,965.63 project was fully funded by the USF.

Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, lauded the development as a timely investment aligned with the administration’s vision of transforming the Federation into a Sustainable Island State.

“I am extremely grateful and pleased that the NTRC and The Cable were able to lend their support to the government at a very critical time as we continue to expand and strengthen our national security architecture,” stated Dr. Drew. “The added security and surveillance capabilities at Cockleshell Bay will enhance the safety and security of all who utilise the area.”

Cockleshell Bay is not only a well-known destination for beachgoers but also serves as a key departure point for water taxis connecting St. Kitts and Nevis. Previously lacking adequate lighting and surveillance, the area had long posed safety risks, especially after dark.

The new system provides 24/7 real-time monitoring and is expected to significantly boost law enforcement’s ability to detect and deter criminal activity. Commissioner of Police James Sutton described the initiative as a forward-thinking response to longstanding safety concerns.

“Cockleshell Bay is a remote yet highly trafficked area—frequented by both residents and visitors,” said Commissioner Sutton. “The introduction of this advanced surveillance system, powered by real-time fibre-optic connectivity, significantly improves our ability to monitor and respond to activities in the area using modern technology.”

The project also benefited from the collaboration of the Ministry of National Security and the St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC), which played a vital role in upgrading lighting infrastructure to support the new security measures.

Prime Minister Drew reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to a safer St. Kitts and Nevis, noting that such upgrades are part of a broader agenda to fortify infrastructure and security in support of national development.
